Device

Highground's device was created by Baroness Eleanor. The blue and the green symbolize the high ground her barony is on and the beautiful blue sky above it. The golden bee is Eleanor's personal symbol and the moon is for her House, Eiluned. The scale represents justice for all. To purchase items with this device, please go to: Cafe Press - mlion. (OOC: Special thanks to Bryan Roberts for his amazing rendering.)

Note: After Eleanor discovered she was truly House Fiona she thought about changing the device. However, she decided not to as the moon can also represent constant change and certainly life is constantly changing.

Political Notes - White Oaks

The state of Illinois is in the Changeling world the Duchy of White Oaks. The Duke of White Oaks, Duke Leonides, despises Baroness Eleanor. They are polar opposites on the political spectrum. Leonides is so much a traditionalist that he is often brutal and cruel to the commoners in his duchy. Eleanor on the other hand prefers nobility to act nobly and treat all fae equally and with respect. (She secretly thinks the noble feudal system should be disbanded for democracy instead but she nearly lost her barony for those thoughts so she is no longer acting upon those beliefs.)

Leonides tried to take Highground from Eleanor in February of 2006 but thanks to Duchess Verlayne's power and desire to keep her duchy in tact, Leonides did not succeed in taking Highground from Eleanor.

Baronial Lunches - Mondays

Once a week Eleanor has lunch at different locations within Highground where everyone can visit her. The first week of the month is at Mary's, the second week is at Grey Faire (in the food court), and the third week is at Sanctuary U. The fourth week used to be at the College of Healing, a fourth freehold in Highground. Unfortunately it was destroyed by Defayne. Now the meeting takes place in the Chinese restaurant across the street from where the College once was. These lunches happen every Monday. There are no lunches on the fifth weeks.

Citizens can come and speak with Eleanor at these events and discuss their concerns, both good and bad. It is also a time for Highground citizens to meet with each other as well. Much time and energy has been put into rebuilding Highground and getting the citizens back into their lives.

Note that Eleanor has an open door policy to her freehold and her time. Anyone can just visit her at any time and she will listen. That is just rule.

Newspapers

The local paper for Terre Haute is the Tribune-Star. BEE of course subscribes to this as well as the New York Times, The Courier Journal, the Indy Star, the Guardian, and the Wall Street Journal. Note that only the Tribune-Star is delivered to the house as the rest are online subscriptions that can be accessed by any of the computers in the house. Afterall, the fae must know what the mortal world is up to.

Fae Communication - The Snickersnee

While Muses uses Grogan - winged cat-like creatures - to deliver messages to both individuals and groups, Highground uses Snickersnee. The Snickersnee look like large dragonflies (click here for some pics and more information; will open in new window) and like dragonflies no two look exactly alike. The Snickersnee require a drop of blood when delivering messages however Eleanor has set up payment where once a month the Snickersnee get a container of chimerical blood. (However Eleanor will let any Snickersnee who is delivering a message take a drop of her blood.)

When communicating between Muses and Highground the Snickersnee and the Grogans deliver messages to each other. There are a few "postal stations" along the mutual border where Grogans and Snickersnee meet.

Since Snickersnee probably have a nasty, sneering attitude it would not be too surprising if Grogans didn't like them. And since Grogans are so sickeningly cute and cuddley it would not be terribly surprising if Snickersnee didn't like them.

Chimerical Giraffes

In 2005 Highground was over run by large chimerical giraffes. They just plain moved into Highground and began simply living. Living to them was drinking fruit juice, building conveyor belts, and controlling what people see when they look in the mirror. Eleanor tried to communicate with them but after spending several hours doing origami with her elbows decided enough was enough. Curbing her desire to make money through safari hunting trips on these animals, she declared that no one in Highground was allowed to hurt the giraffes. This rule still holds true even after a giraffe tried to eat some of the flowers in Eleanor and Aziraphale's wedding. (Note: The groom threw a knife at the gobbling giraffe and it ran away. All of the giraffes in Highground have avoided Aziraphale ever since. In fact, you can see them running from his car whenever he drives by.)

Thanks to the help of Sir Careg, Eleanor found information about the giraffes on a book she found on the Web. You can see it here. Apparently the giraffes believe that Terre Haute, Indiana, the mortal seeming name for Highground, is the best place on Earth. Well Eleanor agrees with them but just wishes they were, well, saner.

And yes, because they are chimerical, mortals cannot see them.
